The Calvert Hall Cardinals took on the St. Paul’s Crusaders in an epic MIAA A Conference lacrosse opener.
The Cardinals started the game slow, and had to dig out of an early hole after goals by St. Paul juniors Henry Riehl, Mikey Wynne, Connor Sheehan and sophomore Alex McGovern gave the Crusaders a 4-1 lead.
The only goal for the Cardinals in that span came from sophomore attackman Tim Kelly.
Calvert Hall fought back with vengeance, while attackman Jordan Germershausen got things started offensively for the Cardinals. Germershausen was able to find the back of the net right before senior defenseman Tyler Mayes blasted a shot and finished to make the game 4-3.
Both teams fought tooth and nail, going back and forth till the final minutes of the half. Calvert Hall went on a run sinking goals by senior midfielders John Belz and Johnny Kelly for an 8-6 halftime lead.
As the teams took the field in the second half, the game got more intense and exciting. Again both teams battled hard, and continued to go back and forth in score. St. Paul’s was able to take an 10-8 lead by goals from McGovern, Wynne, B.J. Mattheiss and Wynne again, but Calvert hall answered right back with three goals, the last one by Tim Kelly 11-11, as the teams headed into the fourth quarter of play.
Goals by John Kelly, and Dutkanych put Calvert Hall over the edge to beat the Crusaders Mattheiss gave the Crusaders a 12-11 lead early in the fourth quarter that lasted until Johnny Kelly’s left-handed laser netted the equalizer with 3:40 remaining.
Then Dutkanych came through by solving the stingy Barretto when it counted most.
The Cardinals have moved far up the rankings and are now located at lucky #16 on the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings. They move on to take on St. Mary’s on Friday April 12.
