Every great player has them: games where you just cannot be stopped. Every dodge seems to blow right by the defender. Every pass find its target in stride, setting up a play. Every shot finds the back of the net.
Calvert Hall’s Timmy Kelly had one of those games. The junior attackman scored an incredible eight goals and one assist pushing the Cardinals pass the Hill Academy 10-9 on March 13.
Kelly, a UNC commit, got things started with the first goal of the game. Then, the Hill Academy responded with five consecutive goals to close out the first quarter. Notching on three more goals before the end of the half, Kelly brought Calvert Hall back within two at a 6-4 halftime score line.
Andrew Fanshaw scored early in the third quarter, and the Pride responded midway through, reestablishing its two-goal cushion at 7-5. After almost five minutes of scoreless lacrosse, Timmy Kelly went to work. Kelly netted three goals in the final 45 seconds of the third quarter to give Calvert Hall an 8-7 going into the fourth.
After the Hill Academy tied the game at 8-8, none other than Timmy Kelly scored his eight goal of the game, giving the Cardinals a 9-8 lead with four minutes to go. JT Bugliosi found the back of the net to give Calvert Hall a two-goal lead with only 1:28 remaining. The Hill Academy did not go down without an attempted come back, scoring in the final seconds of the game; however it was too late to pose a threat.
This intense game came from two of the best high school programs around. Calvert Hall ranked 26th in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings and Ontario’s Hill Academy ranked 9th. Both teams have played fantastic lacrosse thus far with undefeated Calvert Hall (3-0) handing the Hill Academy (4-1) its first loss. Look out for both of these teams as the season progresses.
Calvert Hall next host Collegiate School on March 15.
